Camilla Cavendish, 1989

I had wanted to broaden my horizons, but I had never imagined just how limited those horizons were until I left the UK

Currently Associate Editor and columnist for The Sunday Times, I graduated from Oxford in 1989 with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

The Kennedy Scholarship enabled me to study on the two year Masters in Public Administration program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

The Scholarship was an opportunity to see America from the inside, to make lifelong friendships with people from all over the world, to think more deeply about the subjects I had already studied but also to indulge in studies that were simply not on offer at home at the time - I took some of the first Harvard courses on environmental economics and environmental law, for example.

I had wanted to broaden my horizons, but I had never imagined just how limited those horizons were until I left the UK. An adventure in every sense

I definitely had to pinch myself once or twice during the year!
