Summer Research 2019
The Trust has awarded Summer Research Scholarships of $3,000 to British citizens who are enrolled on doctoral programmes at Harvard or MIT to support particular research this year.
Niloy Biswas
Harvard GSAS Dept of Statistics Niloy’s broad interests include Bayesian inference, reinforcement learning, causal inference, and their applications to the social and biomedical sciences. He intends to learn more about sequential decision making, train in a new field, and build collaborations for his thesis. Niloy read Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Oxford, and conducted research as a UK-US Fulbright Scholar before starting his PhD. He went to school in Luton Town, Bedfordshire. |
Kate Mancey
Harvard GSAS Dept of Music Kate is a music theorist researching the role of sound as a mediator in human-technology interactions. She is interested in the ways in which sound may influence how we approach and engage with technology in daily life, especially in urban environments. Her work engages data science and psychophysics alongside audio-analytic observations from a music-theoretical perspective, informed by critical theory and philosophical discourse. Her research grant will take her to Tokyo and Osaka to begin her study of sound in Japanese urban centers, including Japanese consumer-electronics, and to learn more about the history of sound and technology. Kate is a graduate of the University of Liverpool. |
